Children of the Streets

Bringing Hope to Children

In Kenya, there are many reasons a child might spend most, if not all of their time on the streets. They could be running from an abusive life or have no home at all, or they could be required by conditions of poverty to search for a means of survival.  Without assistance, a child of extreme poverty will not have the means of an education. Someone will have to step in to provide a uniform, transportation, additional school fees, and a safe place to thrive.

For a child of the streets, these streets become the hub of daily life, and the lessons learned are about getting by, getting away with behaviors, and finding a variety of ways to provide for themselves and sometimes others they feel responsible for.

Not being part of a school community is limiting because it’s a separation from the hope of a different and better life.  The Assumption Sisters of Eldoret have worked to rescue and rehabilitate children of the streets at Kwetu Home of Peace in Nairobi, Kenya-a Diocesan Home,  and Morning Star Home in Eldoret which was built by the Sisters.  After the rescue and rehabilitation in these homes there is an effort to reunite the children with their families if this is possible and safe.  The other gift in transforming these lives would be the educational track. There are day schools and boarding schools. Often these children require a boarding school environment with added expense. Boarding schools are not uncommon in Kenya, due to the geography, transportation challenges, and availability of enrollment slots.

The cost of a secondary school education is often the deterrent, yet naturally well worth the cost of keeping these children from a return to their lives on the street.

Yes, it is worth the cost to the giver who becomes a partner in HOPE.
